Michael Cherkas is a Toronto-based graphic designer, comic book artist, cartoonist and graphic novelist.
Red Harvest is his most recent graphic novel. Published in 2023, Red Harvest is a historical family drama set during the Holodomor, the Soviet terror-famine that engulfed Ukraine in the early 1930s.
His other comic book and graphic fiction work includes:
The Silent Invasion—co-created with writer Larry Hancock—is a four-volume “science-fiction / noir thriller” series set in a nightmarish 1950s America;
Suburban Nightmares—a collaboration with Larry Hancock and John van Bruggen—is a collection of short comic book stories based on our childhood fears while growing up in the 1960s;
and The New Frontier—co-created with writer John Sabljic—is an “alternate world” political thriller that originally appeared in Heavy Metal magazine.
“Talking to a Hill,” a short story by Hancock and Cherkas, was nominated for a 2024 Eisner Award—the comic book industry’s “Oscars.” It was published in the award-winning anthology Comics for Ukraine in 2023.
